Read an SMD resistor marking with confidence
SMD resistors may use a three- or four-digit code, R/K/M notation, or EIA-96. The marking primarily identifies nominal value: tolerance, power, technology, and sometimes even the exact convention still need confirmation in the datasheet.
Method and assumptions
A three-digit SMD code combines two significant figures with a decimal multiplier; a four-digit code uses three. EIA-96 combines an E96-series index (01 to 96) with a multiplier letter. R notation commonly acts as the decimal separator, for example 4R7 for 4.7 Ω.

Transcribe the printed characters without completing or changing them. The decoder supports standard three- and four-digit, R/K/M, and EIA-96 formats.

The package, schematic function, and BOM reference help confirm that it is an SMD resistor and that the decoded value is plausible.

Checkable example
472 means 47 × 10², or 4.7 kΩ. For 01C, EIA-96 index 01 corresponds to 100 and C means ×100, so the value is 10 kΩ. The marking alone does not guarantee the part’s power rating or tolerance.
Limits to keep in mind
Formats are not universal across all technologies; shunt resistors and small packages may carry no code; and some EIA-96 multipliers occur in manufacturer-specific variants. Never infer exact part number, power rating, or tolerance from a marking alone.
Frequently asked questions
What do 000 or 0R0 mean?
They generally identify a zero-ohm link used as an SMD jumper. Its real resistance is low but not zero; check current rating and package before replacement.
Does EIA-96 always mean ±1%?
EIA-96 is often associated with E96 precision values, but an observed marking does not replace the manufacturer specification. Consult the datasheet or BOM for actual tolerance.
