Component guide

Decode a resistor and confirm its value

Colour bands remain common on through-hole resistors. Decoding should be followed by checking tolerance, power rating, component condition, and, where possible, a multimeter measurement.

Method and assumptions

The first bands give significant digits, one band sets the multiplier, and the last generally indicates tolerance. The calculator follows IEC 60062 conventions and supports 4-, 5-, and 6-band formats.

Inputs to verify

Reading direction

The tolerance band is often spaced farther apart and sits at the right end. When in doubt, compare both directions with a measurement.

Band count

A precision part often has five significant bands; do not automatically read it as a four-band code.

Recommended workflow

  1. 1Locate the tolerance band and establish reading direction.
  2. 2Select the band count, then assign each colour.
  3. 3Confirm with an unpowered multimeter if the value is critical or uncertain.

Checkable example

Yellow – violet – red – gold corresponds to 4.7 kΩ with ±5% tolerance. The acceptable actual value is therefore about 4.465 kΩ to 4.935 kΩ.

Limits to keep in mind

Bands can be faded, dirty, or ambiguous. SMD resistors use other markings and an in-circuit measurement can be affected by parallel components.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the last band gold or silver?

These colours often indicate tolerance and therefore act as a reading cue rather than a significant digit.

Can I measure a resistor while soldered?

The reading can be distorted by parallel paths. Isolate at least one lead for important diagnostics.
