Choose the right RMS, peak, or peak-to-peak quantity
Signal amplitudes are comparable only when their definition is known. RMS describes the equivalent heating effect of an AC signal; peak and peak-to-peak describe its maximum excursion.
Method and assumptions
For a pure sine wave, Vrms = Vp/√2 and Vpp = 2·Vp. These equalities do not directly apply to square, triangular, or distorted waveforms: their crest factor must be considered.

Checkable example
A 10 V peak sine wave is about 7.07 V RMS and 20 V peak-to-peak. A non-true-RMS meter can be wrong when the signal is not sinusoidal.
Limits to keep in mind
The converter does not characterise noise, bandwidth, or offset. For dissipation and safety, use the complete waveform and the component limits.
Frequently asked questions
Is RMS an average?
Not in the arithmetic sense. It is the root of the mean of squares, which relates the value to heating in a resistor.
What does true RMS mean?
A true-RMS instrument calculates or estimates the effective value of non-sinusoidal waveforms within its bandwidth and crest-factor limits.
